How to Find a Business Niche and Make Money

By Kendra Davenport

If you're looking for a business idea and have been searching he internet recently, you most likely have seen the word ‘niche' tossed around. The general advice is to go out and 'find a profitable niche market'.  So the question is; what is a Niche and how can I find one?

Definition of a Niche

According to Free Dictionary.com one usage of the word is:  'A niche ‘ A special area of demand for a product or service' . For example, 'Organic' is not a niche, but 'organic hair care', or 'organic skincare” are.  To break it down even further, 'raw food vegetarian diet' or 'low fat diet for men', is more narrowly defined and niche focused than just ‘diet'.

How to Find a Profitable Niche

It's possible to make money from buying and selling products without having your own store such as EBay and other similar platforms. You will need to create and promote auctions, compete with a lot of similar items, and of course pay fees.

To make money in on the internet, you need to find out where the customers are. Let's go with our previous example, 'Diet'.  Put this into the all famous Google search engine and you will see tons of advertising for diet and dieting. That means there quite a bit of money to be made there. But also take a look at how many pages - there are over 292,000,000 related web pages.

It's not enough to know how to find a niche but how does one find a profitable niche? That is not a niche market, and unless you have quite a large budget, there is no way you are going to find yourself getting any decent search engine rankings for quite a while, if eve

Drill Down Further

If we so a search for: 'vegetarian diet' that brings us down to millions pages.  Quite a lot of competition, but a good niche all the same.  Next try to put in 'low fat vegetarian diet'. Now we have an even lower number of sites, competing pages and plenty of advertisers on the side of the page.  It's starting to look good. Next, try putting quotation marks around "low fat vegetarian diet"; this makes the search engines see it as an exact search.  Wow, we are now down to 16,000 pages and there are still some sponsored ads.  A note of caution; if there are no companies buying advertising space, there must be a reason for it (no market). You can be pretty sure that someone has already tried; therefore this may not be so good of a niche after all.

If all the above research looks good, then it looks like we have a focused niche where we can possibly get ranked by the search engines fairly quickly and be able to make some money.

Understanding You Niche

So do your research!   Don't be in a hurry. If you don't do it right from the beginning, later on you will find yourself having to redo everything.  Worse, you may even become discouraged and give up, and that is where most internet marketers fail.

Another area to find a niche is through Affiliate Marketing…
